Chapter Sixteen

Nate

After taking Haley back to the cabins and getting an earful of Roy, Danni and I are finally back home. Home, sounds right to call it home. It never felt like one until Danni moved in and made it one.

Walking into the house, I throw my keys, phone and wallet on the table by the door and walk to the kitchen. I need a drink after today. I swear, after I called Dante and tried to explain to him what had happened without telling him about the pictures, we left. All I wanted to do was get my girl home, in bed, and wrap her in my arms. No, Dante had to take another half an hour to get there, get the keys and then start measuring the glass. We left him to do it and took Haley home, who looked kind of shaken up. The adrenalin must have worn off because as soon as we got into the car, she looked like she was two seconds away from passing out, she was shaking that violently.

“Are you hungry?’’ I ask Danni pulling out a can of beer.

“No.’’

“Do you want a drink?’’ I ask.

She doesn’t even answer. Instead she bursts into tears leaning over the counter. I rush over, bringing her into my arms. I’ve been waiting for an outburst since we left the store. I had finally gotten her to calm down after we helped Cage get Kelly into his car. She has tried to stay strong since then, so I knew she was about to explode.

“Shhh Angel. I will sort this out I promise,’’ I soothe.

My arms run lightly up and down her back, caressing her skin. I wish there was something more I could do for her. Rubbing her back doesn’t feel like it’s even helping her. I’m assuring her that everything is okay, when in reality, I have no fucking idea who is doing this to her. The only thing I do know, is that I’ll die helping her. I won’t let him hurt her anymore.

“What if you can’t Nate? What if we never find out who is doing this? Or what if he does actually hurt one of us?’’ she cries.

“Don’t think about it like that Danni. What if we do find out who is doing this? And what if he doesn’t hurt us?’’ I say.

“He already has,’’ she shouts hysterically.

“Calm down Baby. He isn’t going to get that far. Fuck! I don’t even know what to say Angel. You just need to know that I am here for you and I’m not going anywhere. Okay?’’

“Okay,’’ she says sniffling.

“Now, do you want a drink?’’

“Yeah. I have a bottle of WKD in the fridge.’’

“Isn’t that a girls drink?’’ I ask, scrunching my face up.

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed this Nate, but I am a girl,’’ she says giving me her first real smile since today went to shit.

“Oh I noticed,’’ I tell her, my eyes scanning her body up and down. She’s wearing tight leggings
